Lazy Days At Work: Why Do We Procrastinate, Want To Avoid Work And What To Do About It
#Success Is Determined By #Grit, By Being One Of The #DOERS, Those People That #NEVER_QUIT.
Yet Sometimes We All Hit A Blank Page.
You Know What I Am Talking About: The French Originated Word (I.e. “Ennui”) Describes The Emotion Of Having A Job To Do, And REEAAAALLY Don’t Feel Like Doing It!
Hence the Problem: You HAVE To Do Your Job, But You DON’T WANT To Do It…
So You Procrastinate.
Now Of Course We Have All Read The Usual Remedies For Procrastination:
- – I Will Glue My Bottom To The Chair Until I Do The Job! Or…
- – I Will Not Have A Drink Of Coffee Until I Get This Done! Or…
- – I Will Not Go To The Loo, Until I Get This Thing Done (And I Really Need To Pee Right Now, So I Better Hurry)!
Okay, Maybe The Last One Is A Bit Too Much… But I Know Someone That Swore By It.
The Problem Is That These Methods Don’t Work Very Well. In Truth They Barely Work At All!!
So What Should We Do When We Are Beaten Down By #Procrastination?
FIRST: Understand Your Enemy.
Procrastination IS NOT The Same As Being Lazy Or Having A Mountain Of Work To Do. We Procrastinate When We Are Under Stress. Our Brain Is Telling Us That We Are #Too_Much_Stressed, Because We Are Worried About #Money, Or #Health, Or About Some #Relationship_Issues, And Etcetera.
That Is When Our Mind Pulls Our Attention In A Direction Different From Work.
This Is A Natural Defence Mechanism And There’s Nothing Wrong With It.
And The Best Way To Deal With It Is To Understand That WE MUST Lower Our Levels Of #Stress. Unfortunately, Because We Are At Work… That May Not Always Be Possible.
SECOND: What To Do?
- Prepare Yourself For Work: Eliminate Potential Distractions Like Mobile Phones, Ipod/Ipads Or Emails.
- Establish A Suitable SHORT Time To Work, 5 Minutes. Or 10 Minutes, As You See Fit.
- Start Working, Immediately, Without Overthinking It, Knowing That In 5-10 Minutes You Will Stop And TAKE A BREAK.
Sounds Ridiculous, Right? How Can Anyone Achieve Any Work Done If He/She Only Works 5 Minutes?
KAIZEN
In Japan However There Is A System Called KAIZEN Which Has Become Popular In Many Famous Companies. The System Asks You To Do What You Have To Do (But Do Not Feel Like Doing) For ONLY 1 MINUTE.
The Results, Over Time, Clearly Show That This Accumulated One Minute Performance End Up Producing More Than 8 Straight Hours Of Poorly Focused Work.
The 5 Minutes Rule Works The Same Way. Take Your Break, Then Work 5 Minutes. At The End Of The 5 Minutes, If You Feel On A Roll (As Most Of Us Do) Don’t Stop. If You Feel Like Stopping, Then Take A Break. After The Break, Do Another 5 Minutes.
The 5-10 Minutes Makes Sense Also Because Sometimes We Do Not Begin A Job Because It Looks Too Daunting. So Break Up The Job In 5-10 Minutes Tasks… And Sooner Than You Think You Will Complete It.
THIRD: No Self Beating.
Again: Procrastination Is A Mental Response To #Stress, So It’s A Mechanism Designed To Avoid Us Going Mad. Better Taking A Break Than Going Stark Raving Mad And Daydreaming About Killing All Of Your Co-Workers!
Also, Another Reason Why We Tend To Beat Ourselves Is That The Goals Set By The Company, Or The Office, Are Unrealistic. Stop Looking At What “You Are Supposed To Do” And Start Working On What “You Can Do”.
Another Way To Look At It Is To Focus On The End Result, And Not The Work That It Takes To Accomplish A Task: Before Starting You Imagine How Good Will It Feel Once You Finish The Job. Then Immediately Start Doing It.
And Finally: If You Have Been Procrastinating… No Regrets, No Remorse, No Self-Deprecation. They Accomplish NOTHING! After All, If You Are Not Meant To Procrastinate… Why There Are So Many Videos Of Kittens And Puppies On You Tube?
